Sports-Related Concussions

Rececntly as of August 19. 2010 the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has passed a new law related to sports-related head injuries, to ensure the saftey of all young athletes.

What does the law do?

  • Requires Public schools to make sure student athlets, parents, coaches and any others involved in interscholastic sports learn about the consequences of head injuries and concussions through training programs and written material.
  • The law requires athletes and their parents to inform their coaches about prior head injuries at the beginning of the season.
  • If a student athlete becomes unconscious or suffers a known or suspected concussion during a game or a practice the law mandates removing the athlete from play or practice and requires written certification from a licensed medical professional for ”return-to-play”
  • Prohibits the encouragement or permitting of student athletes to use sports equipment as a weapon or to use techniques that would endanger other players.
