Finding primary documents can be very easy if you know what you are looking for. Sometimes its just a matter of knowing what to type in the search box. However, this can take some effort. One way is to look in a secondary source first. Often someone else has already done the research for you. Say your topic is on the Battle of Lexington. Find a book on the topic and see what documents the author used. Then you can find them yourself. The document you are looking for may be on the web but may not come up in a search engine. Try checking out the collections of documents listed below.

National Archives Exhibit Hall
The largest repository of American documents offers many of them on this section of their website.

Presents "100 milestone documents in American history", along with original document images, transcripts, and interpretive material.

Making of America (Cornell)
These are two separate but complementary collections comprise
"a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction."

The Avalon Project 
Documents in Law, History, and Goverment from Yale Law School.


A Hypertext of American History:  from the colonial period until Modern Times 

 A web site prepared by students at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands that focuses on pre-WWI American history.  Contains reproductions of 112 primary documents grouped by time period.

British Library: Living Words
