Introduction

In England in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Industrial Revolution brought about great changes in the lives of many people. New inventions changed the nature of work, of travel, and of domestic life, but not without a cost.  Many industrial workers suffered great hardships:  low wages, long hours, unsafe working conditions, and low life expectancy.  Over time, some laws were passed and changes made so that workers’ lives were not so miserable, but should more have been done?  Should changes have been made sooner?  Your job will be to investigate some of the specific evils of the Industrial Revolution, to write about them, and to propose solutions to the problems you find.
