The Earth is one of nine planets in our solar system and, as far as we know, it is the only one able to support life.  Possibly, it is the only planet in the universe on which life exists.  What also makes our planet so special is the incredible diversity of forms which living organisms have evolved into and the habitats which they occupy.  Life can be found to exist in the most unlikely locations.  From the depths of the dark, salty oceans to the hot, dry deserts to the cold polar ice caps, living organisms have adapted to their surroundings and have occupied crucial niches in the functioning of their ecosystems.  In order to learn more about the variety of life found on our planet, we will explore the characteristics of each of the major biomes.
