INTRODUCTION:
The United Nations
is about to launch the Earth's first weather manipulating satellite. In
order to have the information needed to program the satellite, the UN's
lead scientists need to create a database of information on the patterns
of the earth's weather. Since the satellite cannot manipulate all
the earth's weather, the UN must decide which weather patterns cause the
greatest effect on society.
TASK:
You and your
team of meteorologists have been called upon to research specific Earth's
global weather patterns. You must prepare a presentation that describes
a weather pattern and shows how a particular weather pattern affects a
certain area of the world.
PROCEDURE:
-
Once the UN has divided you into teams,
each team member must assume one of the following roles:
|
Team Leader
|
Responsible for keeping
the team on task, completing a LEADER worksheet and writing a five paragraph essay summarizing the presentation
complete with bibliography.
|
|
Meteorologist
|
Responsible for a complete
description of the weather pattern and its causes, completing the METEOROLOGIST
worksheet as well as citing
all sources of meteorological information.
|
|
Sociologist
|
Responsible for determining
the effect the weather pattern has on the people of the area, completing the Sociologist
worksheet and citing
all sources of sociological information.
|
|
Technology Specialist
|
Responsible for the design
of the presentation, and for rating all sources of infomation.
|
-
Each team member should begin researching
their weather pattern using the internet resources below as well as information
from: Magazines, Scientific Journals, Books, and Encyclopedias. Information
should be obtained that will describe the weather pattern and its cause,
as well as any affect on society. Team members should make sure to
document all sources correctly.
-
The technology specialist should make
sure that each website is rated. A website that receives a good rating
should be: clear, informative and easy to use.

1 - poor
5 - excellent

When research is completed, all team
members should brainstorm for materials that will be used during the presentation,
that will aid in completing the task. The team should then create
an outline of the presentation.
-
Once the outline is complete, all team
members will aid in the creation of the presentation, which will include
either a posterboard or electronic presentation. The design must
describe, and highlight the causes and effects on society of the weather
pattern.
-
The team leader will complete a 5 paragraph
essay that summarizes the presentation and has a bibliography which documents
all the resources used. The Meteorologist and the Sociology must
supply the Team Leader with all the information needed for the bibliography.
Correct Resource Citation
-
At the time of the presentation each
team member must report on his/her aspect of the project, and the following
items turned over the UN leaders,
|
To be passed in:
|
-
Rating chart for websites
-
A research packet
-
Outline used to prepare the presentation
-
5 Paragraph summary essay
-

-
Poster Board or electronic presentation

EVALUATION:
CONCLUSION:
When you have
completed your task, the UN will have enough information to decide which
weather patterns have the greatest affect on society, as well as the information
needed to manipulate it. Now, with the complete UN delegation in class,
help to decide which four weather patterns will be changed.
